Meet Rommy
Kushner

I am a foreign language teacher, community advocate, and lifelong learner. Throughout my career, I have worked in education in Mexico, Panama, and the United States. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for the diverse backgrounds, strengths, and needs of students. I have also continued my professional growth through the Stanford World Language Project, focusing on language acquisition and effective teaching practices.

As a paraeducator in the Sunnyvale School District, I have had the privilege of working closely with students, supporting teachers, and collaborating with families. This work has reinforced my belief that every student deserves a learning environment where they feel supported, valued, and able to succeed.

Over the years, I have been fortunate to serve the Sunnyvale community in many ways. I served on the School District's Instructional Focus Team, helping educators and administrators develop a strategic plan centered on student success. In 2023, I was honored to be named Employee of the Year at San Miguel Elementary School.

One experience that deeply affected me was seeing high school students stranded in the rain because a bus was too full to stop.

When I later learned that some of those students were marked tardy, I became involved with Sunnyvale Equity in Education to advocate for better transportation access for students in North Sunnyvale.

I also served on the Fremont Union High School District Community Trustee Area Districting (CTAD) Committee, helping to elevate the voices of families whose perspectives are not always heard, particularly those from Spanish-speaking households.

My interest in serving on the school board comes from what I see every day in our schools. I understand the challenges faced by students receiving special education services and multilingual learners, as well as the pressures facing teachers and staff. I also see the tremendous resilience, talent, and potential in our school community.
